If you have ever considered using social bookmarking sites and asked yourself “what are the benefits of using social bookmarking”, then you are definitely not alone. Many people, especially those new to social media may not fully appreciate all that social bookmarking has to offer. I am here to help you answer that question.

There are five main benefits to using social media and bookmarking sites.

1) Branding yourself or your products. When a new company is started, no one really knows who they are. Social sites have a way of breaking out the news like no other medium. Sure you could do press releases, but more and more people are not reading “the news”, especially the younger generations. Social bookmarking your site puts your branding images in front of tons of people.

2) Free advertising to the masses. While social bookmarking was not created as a form of advertising, it does the job quite well. This is a simple byproduct of using it. Like branding above, the more you use social media, the more people who are eventually going to take notice of you. This is simply an “online word of mouth” type of promotion.

3) Links to your website. One of the biggest benefits to using social bookmarking sites is the links that are generated back to your site. Regardless of what any search engine will tell you, more links equal more traffic. This is simply because more links equals more places for people to click on your links. It’s all about the numbers.

4) Social buzzing in the ear of the people. Social networking and bookmarking sites have the pulse of the nation at their fingertips. There have been many stories that have found their way around the globe in a matter of minutes due to the nature of the story. Even the major news networks cannot cover news this fast using traditional methods. This is known as instant buzz. The greater the buzz the greater the effect it has.

5) Traffic targeted to your content. Another great benefit of social media is targeted traffic. You post content and a user reads that content. They are interested in what you had to say or offer. People who are not interested are not going to read it. That simple.
